Will this USB work with my computer?

It is intended for most conventional 64-bit Intel and AMD desktop PCs and laptops that support booting from USB.

Usually suitable

  • 64-bit Intel or AMD desktop PC or laptop
  • USB boot available in the firmware or boot menu
  • Dual-core 2GHz processor or better
  • 6GB RAM or more recommended
  • 25GB or more internal storage for installation
  • Standard PC UEFI or legacy BIOS firmware

Not suitable / not guaranteed

  • Apple Silicon Macs using M1, M2, M3, M4 or later chips
  • ARM-only PCs, tablets or single-board computers
  • Most Chromebooks without specialist modification
  • Computers locked by an unknown BIOS/UEFI password
  • Devices whose organisation blocks USB booting
  • 32-bit-only processors
Quick self-check

Look for these four things.

  1. Processor: Windows Settings usually shows “64-bit operating system, x64-based processor”.
  2. Memory: 6GB RAM or more is recommended for the current desktop release.
  3. Storage: Allow at least 25GB for a basic installation, with more space preferred for files and applications.
  4. Boot access: Confirm that you can open the boot menu or UEFI settings and select a USB device.

Important limitations

Hardware support can vary.

Wi-Fi, graphics and sound
Most common hardware works, but some devices need additional drivers or may have limited support. Use the live try option to test networking, display, audio, keyboard and touchpad before installing.
Secure Boot
Official Ubuntu installation media is designed for modern UEFI systems. Firmware settings and manufacturer implementation vary, so some computers may still require a settings change before the USB appears.
Very old computers
A 64-bit processor alone does not guarantee a good experience. Older machines with little memory, weak graphics or slow storage may run poorly with the current standard desktop edition.
Apple computers
This USB contains the AMD64 PC image. It is not intended for Apple Silicon Macs. Compatibility with older Intel Macs varies and is not guaranteed.
